Introduction

What is the greatest sin in the eyes of God? Discord. The following verses makes it clear that of the seven sins God despises, the one more grievous than any other including murder is discord:

16 There be six things, which the Lord hateth, and the seventh he utterly adhorreth. (CVB,BB,DRB)
17 [1] A proud look, [2] a lying tongue, and [3] hands that shed innocent blood,
18 [4] An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, [5] feet that be swift in running to mischief,
19 [6] A false witness that speaketh lies, and [7] he that soweth discord among brethren.
19 [6] a false witness who pours out lies and [7] a person who stirs up conflict in the community. (NIV) (Proverbs 6)

Like in the days of John the Baptist, right now the Kingdom of Heaven is suffering from infighting:

From the days of John the Baptist until now, the holy nation of heaven has suffered very much. Fighting men try to take it. (Matthew 11:12 NLV)

The coming of Our Lord is described as a wedding between Jesus and Believers. Before that wedding, the wife (us) must make herself “ready”:

7 Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready. (Revelation 19:7 NKJV)

In what way has she (Believers) made herself “ready”?

8 And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. (Revelation 19:8 NKJV)

She made herself ready by her fine clothing, which represent “righteous acts.” Other translations use: right living, righteousness, deeds.

We as a people are not ready to meet Our Lord, for our deeds have been apostate, fallen, and driven by pride, envy, and deception. Our divisive acts are not considered “righteous.” Acts flow from the heart: divisive acts = divisive hearts:

1 What is the cause of your conflicts and quarrels with each other? Doesn’t the battle begin inside of you as you fight to have your own way and fulfill your own desires?
2 You jealously want what others have so you begin to see yourself as better than others. You scheme with envy and harm others to selfishly obtain what you crave – that’s why you quarrel and fight. (James 4 TPT)

26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. (Matthew 23:26)

8 Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. (James 4:8)

We as a people must have righteous acts, that flow from righteous souls.

9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
11 For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. (1 John 3:9-11)

We are in big trouble for the divisions we have caused in communities, and around the world – “in the name of Jesus”:

10  Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions [Grk. schisms] among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.
12  Every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ. Is Christ divided? (1 Corinthians 1:10,12-13)

Discord was the first sin ever committed when Lucifer and one-third of the angels rebelled.

12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit. (Isaiah 14:12-15)

4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven (Revelation 12:4)

6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. (Jude 1:6)

8 Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity. (Ecclesiastes 12:8)

Solution

The solution according to King Solomon was to keep Seven Commandments and receive Three Blessings.

Commandments

Each of the Seven Commandments are supported by the masterful discourse in James 4.

Pride

6 God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. (James 4:6)

10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord. (James 4:10)

Lies

11 Speak not evil one of another, brethren. (James 4:11)

2 You jealously want what others have so you begin to see yourself as better than others. You scheme with envy and harm others to selfishly obtain what you crave. (James 4:2 TPT)

Murder

2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war. (James 4:2)

Wicked Imaginations

4 You have become spiritual adulterers who are having an affair, an unholy relationship with the world. Don’t you know that flirting with the world’s values places you at odds with God? Whoever chooses to be the world’s friend makes himself God’s enemy! (James 4:4 TPT)

Quick To Do Evil

12 Who art thou that judgest another? (James 4:12)

17 To him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin. (James 4:17)

False Witness

11 Dear friends, as part of God’s family, never speak against another family member, for when you slander a brother or sister you violate God’s law of love. And your duty is not to make yourself a judge of the law of love by saying that it doesn’t apply to you, but your duty is to obey it! (James 4:11 TPT)

Discord

1 Where do those fights and quarrels among you come from? They come from your selfish desires. (James 4:1 ISV)

1 What is the cause of your conflicts and quarrels with each other? Doesn’t the battle begin inside of you as you fight to have your own way and fulfill your own desires? (James 4:1 TPT)

Promises

In addition to those Seven Commandments, are Three Promises. Solomon, the wisest of men (aside from Our Lord) suggested that the commandments be worn around the neck, and placed over the heart:

21 Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck. (Proverbs 6:21)

In other words, they are to be worn as an amulet:

The “tying about” the neck may suggest the use of amulets, an Oriental custom, to ward off evil, but it is more likely that it refers to the wearing of ornaments. (Pulpit Commentary)

He said that the commandments could be viewed as “a lamp” and “a light” for life:

23 For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life: (Proverbs 6:23)

20 My son, keep your father’s command and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.
21 Bind them always on your heart; fasten them around your neck.
22 When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; when you awake, they will speak to you.
23 For this command is a lamp, this teaching is a light, and correction and instruction are the way to life, (Proverbs 6:20-23 NIV)

With the following three specific promises:

1 Lead

22 When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee. (Proverbs 6:22)

2 Protect

22 When you walk, their counsel will lead you. When you sleep, they will protect you. When you wake up, they will advise you. (Proverbs 6:22 NLT)

When thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; from terrifying dreams, evil spirits, dangers by fire or thieves; one that observes it conscientiously may lie down and sleep, secure of the guardianship of divine Providence, and not fear any evil; (Gill’s Exposition of the Entire Bible)

3 Advise

22 They will lead you when you walk. They will watch over you when you sleep, and they will talk with you when you wake up. (Proverbs 6:22)

22 When you walk, their counsel will lead you. When you sleep, they will protect you. When you wake up, they will advise you. (Proverbs 6:22 NLT)

22 When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; when you awake, they will speak to you. (Proverbs 6:22 NIV)

And when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee; familiarly; and instruct what to do, and how to behave the day following; or ‘it shall go out with thee’, into the fields for a morning’s walk, and assist in meditation. (Gill’s Exposition of the Entire Bible)

Before Jesus Comes #1

The Good News that Jesus taught [Matthew, Mark, Luke, John]  must go to all the world:

And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.  (Matthew 24:14)

Before Jesus Comes #2

A Christian apostasy must take place:

Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day [when Jesus returns] shall not come, except there come a falling away first.  (2 Thessalonians 2:3)

Before Jesus Comes #3

The deceiver who caused the Christian Apostasy must be revealed:

And that man of sin be revealed.   (2 Thessalonians 2:3)
