Introduction

16 Watch yourself how you act and what you teach. Stay true to what is right. If you do, you and those who hear you will be saved from the punishment of sin. (1 Timothy 4:16 NLV)

His Doctrine

Jesus preached a very distinct doctrine:

2 And he taught them many things by parables, and said unto them in his doctrine, (Mark 4:2)

32 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power. (Luke 4:32)

This doctrine was given to Jesus by His father God:

16 Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. (John 7:16)

Jesus encouraged others to learn the truth of God’s doctrine for themselves:

17 If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself. (John 7:17)

And cautioned against anyone who would add to God’s doctrine, saying, that they do it to lift themselves up, not God:

18 He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him. (John 7:18)

Very clearly, if a person does not abide by the doctrine that Jesus Himself taught in the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, then they are not following God and you should not receive that person into your house:

9 Anyone who runs on ahead and does not remain in the doctrine of Christ [that is, one who is not content with what He taught], does not have God; but the one who continues to remain in the teaching [of Christ does have God], he has both the Father and the Son.
10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching [but diminishes or adds to the doctrine of Christ], do not receive or welcome him into your house, and do not give him a greeting or any encouragement;
11 for the one who gives him a greeting [who encourages him or wishes him success, unwittingly] participates in his evil deeds. (2 John 1)

Thus we see the doctrine that Jesus taught was not His own but His father’s, and we are not to add to, take away from it, or condone those who have.

Doctrine

As detailed on the Prophecies page, Jesus and His apostles foretold widespread apostasy in the body of Christ, and said it would come by way of False Teachings through greedy believers who were influenced by Deceiving Spirits. The doctrine of Jesus is to be protected at all cost, and nothing is to be put to it, or taken away from it. The following scriptures confirm how serious this is:

They also that erred in spirit shall come to understanding, and they that murmured shall learn doctrine. (Isaiah 29:24)

Commandments of Men

7  Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying,
8  This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
9  But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. (Matthew 15:7-9)

7  Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
8  For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. (Mark 7:7-8)

Pharisees & Sadducees

11  How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees?
12  Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees. (Matthew 16:11-12)

Perverse Things

29  For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.
30  Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.
31  Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears. (Acts 20:29-31)

Words, Fair Speeches

17  Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.
18  For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple. (Romans 16:17-18)

No Divisions

10  Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. (1 Corinthians 1:10)

Everyone a Doctrine

26  How is it then, brethren?  when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation.  Let all things be done unto edifying. (1 Corinthians 14:26)

Commandments of Men

20  Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances, after the commandments and doctrines of men? (Colossians 2:20-22)

Man-made Rules

20 You have died with Christ and become dead to those old ways. Then why do you follow the old ways of worship? Why do you obey man-made rules?
21 These rules say, You must not put your hand on this. Do not put this into your mouth. You must not put your finger on that.
22 All these things come to an end when they are used. You are following only man-made rules. (Colossians 2 NLV)

Unity of Faith

13  Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
14  That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; (Ephesians 4:13-14)

We or an Angel

But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. (Galatians 1:8-9)

Same Yesterday, Today, Forever

Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.
Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines.  (Hebrews 13:8-9)

No Other Doctrine

3  As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine,
4  Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.
5  Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:
6  From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling;
Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.
10  For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;
11  According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust. (1 Timothy 1)

Doctrines of Devils

1  NOW the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; (1 Timothy 4:1)

Take Heed

16 Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you. (1 Timothy 4:16)

Be Not Blasphemed

1  LET as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed.
If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;
He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,
5  Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself. (1 Timothy 6:1-5)

Not Endure

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
4  And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. (2 Timothy 4:3-4)

Adorn The Doctrine

7  In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,
10  Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things. (Titus 2)

Jesus’ Departing Prayer

Notice in Jesus’ departing prayer to God on behalf of His disciples that He affirms His mission was to deliver the Good News of His Father to them, and then they were commanded to go “into the world” and share it with all. There is no mention of separating from the world, building churches, and keeping to themselves.

3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. (John 17:3)

4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. [This was prior to Him being crucified; so the work was the Good News.] (John 17:4)

8 For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me. (John 17:8)

6 I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word. (John 17:6)

11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are. (John 17:11)

13 And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves. (John 17:13)

14 I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. (John 17:14)

15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. [pride] (John 17:15)

17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. (John 17:17)

18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. (John 17:18)

20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; (John 17:20)

21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. (John 17:21)

22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: (John 17:22)

23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me. (John 17:23)

Paul’s Departing Prayer

Paul warns that perverse things will be taught after he leaves, “not sparing the flock.” He encourages them to remember and do what Jesus taught – help those less fortunate. Again, there is no mention of building churches.

28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.
32 And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.
33 I have coveted no man’s silver, or gold, or apparel.
34 Yea, ye yourselves know, that these hands have ministered unto my necessities, and to them that were with me.
35 I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.
36 And when he had thus spoken, he kneeled down, and prayed with them all.
37 And they all wept sore, and fell on Paul’s neck, and kissed him,
38 Sorrowing most of all for the words which he spake, that they should see his face no more. And they accompanied him unto the ship. (Acts 20:28-38)

Before Jesus Comes #1

The Good News that Jesus taught [Matthew, Mark, Luke, John]  must go to all the world:

And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.  (Matthew 24:14)

Before Jesus Comes #2

A Christian apostasy must take place:

Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day [when Jesus returns] shall not come, except there come a falling away first.  (2 Thessalonians 2:3)

Before Jesus Comes #3

The deceiver who caused the Christian Apostasy must be revealed:

And that man of sin be revealed.   (2 Thessalonians 2:3)
